About this event in the Jura in Dole
Understanding what happens to waste at Courlaoux
On Wednesday 25 November 2026, Serre Vivante invites the general public to discover the waste storage and landfill centre at Courlaoux, in the Jura. This awareness-raising initiative is part of the European Week for Waste Reduction programme. It invites people to learn more about what happens to our waste and to consume more responsibly.
This visit follows the one organised last year in Lons-Le-Saunier, where SYDOM du Jura has been sorting and recovering waste from all Jura residents for 30 years.
What arrives at the landfill site
At Courlaoux, huge landfill cells take sorting rejects, business waste considered non-recoverable and non-hazardous, and mixed residual waste from household waste recycling centres.
Every year, thousands of tonnes of waste collected at these recycling centres are buried here: 7,096 tonnes in 2025. Yet a significant proportion of this waste could have a different fate. Scrap metal, paper, recyclable packaging and wood are among the materials concerned.
More than one in five items of waste could potentially be diverted from landfill into recycling or recovery streams. This is a potential for redirection into other streams, at the heart of the issues presented during this awareness-raising visit.
Resources and treatment costs at stake
Directing more materials into appropriate streams is a major environmental challenge in conserving resources. Reducing the volume sent to landfill also has economic implications: it helps keep the cost of the public service under better control. Treatment of each tonne sent to landfill is charged at €175.
Departure from Dole and compulsory booking
The coach is scheduled to leave at 13:45 from the car park on avenue de Lahr, 39100 Dole, opposite the Passerelle du Prélot and the marina. The return is expected at around 18:00. The announced time slot for Wednesday 25 November 2026 is 13:45 to 18:00.
The visit is open to everyone. Places are limited, so booking is required through Jean-Claude on 06.30.32.50.45 or by email at [email protected].
The price is €10; participation is free for members.
