About this event in the Jura in Poligny
A life from the 16th century to the present day
At the Chapelle de la Congrégation in Poligny, Collectif Gwen presents Orlando, a theatrical production based on Virginia Woolf’s work. At the heart of the story is a hero who lives through the centuries and changes sex during his lifetime.
Orlando is first an apprentice poet in the Elizabethan era, then an ambassador in Constantinople. One fine morning in the 18th century, he wakes up transformed into a woman. This transformation opens a new chapter in her life: through her adventures, she discovers “the constraints and privileges” attached to her new sexual identity.
Writing, beyond society’s demands
Faced with the demands of the Victorian era, Orlando resists as best she can. The 20th century brings her a liberating impetus: she finally manages to write, fulfilling the dream she already held as a young boy.
Resolutely modern, Virginia Woolf’s novel combines rare humour and intelligence. Through this life stretching from the 16th century to the present day, it invites us to write our own lives, free from all subjugation.
The show and its performers
The adaptation, direction and performance are by Lucie Brandsma, Sébastien Dalloni and Thomas Harel. This Collectif Gwen production lasts 1 hour and is suitable for audiences aged 11 and over.
