About this event in the Jura in Foncine-le-Haut
In Foncine-le-Haut, a refurbished sawmill with multiple uses
A former sawmill converted into a multi-service hub and micro-hydroelectric power station: this is the second stop on the itinerary offered by CAUE du Jura for the Journées nationales de l’architecture. Around the theme ‘Refurbishing: building the future’, this itinerary offers a rare chance to step inside three remarkable refurbishment projects in the Jura.
In Foncine-le-Haut, the tour focuses on a transformation carried out by the practice AD+ Architectes Designer Associés. The practice's architects will give a special presentation and commentary on this project. Their contribution will offer an insight into the project through the choices made by those who designed it.
New services in an existing building
Located in the heart of the village, the former sawmill now houses a multimedia library, a tourist office, a music school and a France Services centre. These different functions give the building a new purpose while meeting the area's needs.
The refurbishment has preserved the site's characteristics while combining them with new uses. It demonstrates how existing heritage can be reinvented to meet contemporary challenges without erasing what makes a place distinctive.
The restored waterwheel plays a special role in this transformation. It highlights the site's industrial history and now contributes to the building's electricity production. The project therefore combines the services housed in the former sawmill with its role as a micro-hydroelectric power station.
Understanding the choices with the projects' creators
The three tours on the itinerary are led by the architects and designers involved. They offer a behind-the-scenes look at the transformations, the choices that guided each project and a direct exchange with their creators.
The Foncine-le-Haut stop sits between two other discoveries: it is preceded by a visit to a former barn converted into a home in Lac-des-Rouges-Truites, and followed by a final visit in Pont-de-Poitte.
A round-table discussion to extend the itinerary
After the visits, the architects will come together for a round-table discussion devoted to refurbishing existing buildings and the challenges involved. It will be moderated by Stéphane Écarnot, director of CAUE du Jura, and will continue the conversations begun along the way. A convivial gathering will conclude the day.
For organisational reasons, registration is compulsory.
