Exhibition "A (MINI) ALBERT FLOCON RETROSPECTIVE" from Bahaus to Paris
Exhibition curator : Eléa Sicre, from INHA (Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art)
At Centre culturel du Grandvaux from 3 October to 25 November 2026.
Through a previously unseen selection, the exhibition invites visitors to discover the many facets of the work of Albert Flocon (1909–1994), born Mentzel, and the variety of techniques he explored from his earliest experiments to his mature work. Born in Köpenick, Germany, he studied at the Bauhaus for three years.
In 1933, he fled the Nazi regime and settled in France, where he would pursue the bulk of his artistic and intellectual work, profoundly shaped by engraving. The war and the Occupation marked an irrevocable rupture in his life: his wife and daughter were gassed at Auschwitz, and he himself was imprisoned by the Gestapo in Toulouse, where he devised his first perspectives and vanishing points.
The diversity of his work is revealed here through chronological sequences and freer juxtapositions, bringing out several major motifs: landscape, the world of performance, the figure, self-portraiture and fragments of reality tinged with surrealism, as well as an enduring taste for variation and invention.
Paintings, drawings and watercolours allow visitors to follow his explorations from one technique to another and gain a close insight into his creative process. Engraving naturally occupies a central place: working with a burin, Flocon developed a rich and original practice, presented through several works, including some rare impressions.
As much a craftsman as a theorist of the representation of space, he applied the principles of curvilinear perspective to large pictorial compositions, brought together to reveal a distinctive way of translating reality at the boundary between optics and imagination.
More unexpected creations, in which art and geometry continue to intersect, complete this overview and bear wider witness to a constantly renewed visual inventiveness, at the meeting point of eye and hand.
