La Cabiotte offers an excursion to Arbois, combining a tasting at the Reine Jeanne, the Musée de la Vigne et du Vin and the Maison Pasteur.
About this event in the Jura in Salins-les-Bains
Arbois, from wine to science
La Cabiotte offers an excursion to Arbois, France's first AOC and the historic capital of Jura wines. Presented as an afternoon of discovery, the outing is also described as a full day combining wine tasting, wine-growing heritage and scientific discovery. The listing gives Grignotte Café in Salins-les-Bains as the venue.
The itinerary brings together three stops: the Gothic cellar of the Reine Jeanne, the Musée de la Vigne et du Vin at château Pécauld and Louis Pasteur's family home. It explores winemaking traditions alongside the scientist's private life, in the heart of a village whose charm has been preserved.
Tasting at the Cave de la Reine Jeanne
The day begins with a tasting of Jura wines in a medieval setting. Unique in Arbois, this Gothic-style cellar is listed as a Historic Monument. It was built in 1322 by Jeanne, one of the daughters of the dukes of Burgundy who became Queen of France.
The Musée de la Vigne et du Vin du Jura
The visit continues at château Pécauld. This restored building, dating from the 13th to the 18th century, has housed the museum since 1993.
The tour begins outside, in the recreated vineyards surrounding the château. It then continues through the cellars and museum rooms. The various winemaking methods are presented here, along with the history and traditions of Jura winegrowers, including vin jaune, vin de paille and Macvin.
Inside Louis Pasteur's house
The afternoon ends at the Maison de Louis Pasteur, where the scientist returned every year. Preserved as it was, it retains its furniture, décor and billiard table, as well as a restored laboratory.
These features offer an insight into the private life and work of the scientist who invented the rabies vaccine and pasteurisation. This final stop complements the exploration of wine and wine-growing with a look at a great figure of science.
