About this event in the Jura in Foncine-le-Haut
A sawmill turned multi-service hub
In Foncine-le-Haut, a former sawmill in the heart of the village now houses a multimedia library, a tourist office and a music school. Its conversion into a multi-service hub and micro-hydroelectric power station, carried out by the practice AD+ Architectes Designer Associés, is the second stop on an itinerary offered by the CAUE du Jura.
This special opening is part of the National Architecture Days, centred on the theme “Rehabilitation: building the future”. To mark the occasion, the CAUE du Jura invites visitors to discover three remarkable rehabilitation projects in the Jura, with commentary by the architects and designers behind them.
Preserving the site and giving it new uses
The tour of the former sawmill will offer a behind-the-scenes look at its transformation. The rehabilitation preserved the site's distinctive features while giving the building a new purpose, with uses tailored to the needs of the local area.
The restored waterwheel has a special place in this project. It highlights the site's industrial history and now contributes to the building's electricity production. The existing heritage has thus been reinvented to meet contemporary challenges, combining new functions with retained and restored features.
For this special occasion, architects from AD+ Architectes Designer Associés will present and discuss the completed project. Their explanations will shed light on the decisions that shaped it and provide an opportunity to speak directly with its creators.
Three rehabilitation projects and a closing discussion
The itinerary for the day includes
- A first visit in Lac-des-Rouges-Truites, to a former barn converted into a home.
- This second stop in Foncine-le-Haut, focusing on the former sawmill turned multi-service hub and micro-hydroelectric power station.
- A final visit in Pont-de-Poitte.
At the end of the itinerary, the architects will gather for a round-table discussion chaired by Stéphane Écarnot, director of the CAUE du Jura. The discussion will continue on the rehabilitation of existing buildings and the challenges involved. An informal get-together will round off the day.
